The Golden Globes, an annual award ceremony honoring outstanding achievement in film and television, was held just last week on January 11th, 2026, at 5:00 PM PST. It’s pretty much the first major award ceremony of awards season and was made up of so many incredible celebrities and actors, many of which giving important speeches on what matters. The award show originally started in 1944 for film, and later added television in 1956, but today let’s look at what happened at this year's 83nd Golden Globes.
Hosted by Nikki Glaser, an American stand-up comedian who also hosted the 82nd ceremony, the Globes featured many incredible movies and actors who took home trophies. Big movie winners included: Hamnet, starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley, taking home Best Drama, and One Battle After Another with Leonardo DiCaprio and Teyana Taylor taking home Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture. Another win was Maggie Kang’s KPop Demon Hunters taking home Best Animated, and Sinners with Michael B Jordan winning Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. However, at the Golden Globes, it’s not just movies themselves winning, much like other award ceremonies like The Oscars, it’s also the actors and directors being recognized. Paul Thomas Anderson took home an award for directing and writing One Battle After Another, and Timothée Chalamet took home Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy Film for his outstanding performance in Marty Supreme.
In addition to the movies and movie actors winning, television series also got their fair share of love that night. Seth Rogen’s The Studio took home Best Television Series Musical or Comedy and Best Television Drama Series went to The Pitt starring Noah Wyle. Additionally, the award for Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television went to Adolescence, and creators like Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham accepted the award. Onto television actors, the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series Musical or Comedy award went to Jean Smart for her incredible performance in Hacks, and in the male category, the award went to Seth Rogen for his role in The Studio. On the Drama side, the best performance award was given to Rhea Seehorn for her performance in Pluribus, a show surrounding the idea of the most miserable person on Earth saving the world from happiness.
The red carpet is an important part of the Golden Globe Awards because it is where guests are welcomed and photographed before the ceremony begins. The tradition of using a red carpet goes back many years and was originally meant to show honor and importance to special guests. Today, the red carpet helps reporters and fans see who is attending the event and what they are wearing. Fashion is important because clothing is a form of creative expression, just like movies and television shows. Designers and actors often work together to create outfits that represent style, culture, and personality. At the Golden Globes, the red carpet allows fashion to be celebrated as another art form alongside film and television.
So, while looking at the winners is important, its just as important to understand the history behind the event. The Golden Globe Awards began in 1944 as a way to honor outstanding movies made in the United States. It was created by a group of journalists called the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who reported on American entertainment for audiences around the world! At first, the awards focused mainly on movies, but over time they expanded to include television shows and actors as well. This made the Golden Globes special because they celebrate both film and TV in one event. As the years passed, the ceremony grew into a major awards show watched by millions of people. Today, the Golden Globes continue to recognize creativity, storytelling, and hard work in entertainment!
