All About Coca-Cola

Written by: Zeenia Bharucha

Have you ever wondered how Coca-Cola became one of the most popular drinks in the world? Today, it is sold in more than 200 countries and enjoyed by millions of people every day. From its unique flavor to its famous red logo, Coca-Cola has become one of the most recognizable brands in history.

History

Coca-Cola was created in 1886 by a pharmacist named Dr. John S. Pemberton in Atlanta, Georgia. He originally made the drink as a syrup that was mixed with carbonated water and sold at a local pharmacy. At first, only about nine glasses were sold each day. Over time, more people discovered the drink, and it quickly became popular across the United States and eventually around the world.

How It's Made

The exact Coca-Cola recipe is one of the company's biggest secrets. Although no one outside the company knows the complete formula, the drink is made with carbonated water, sugar (or sweeteners in some versions), caramel color, phosphoric acid, natural flavors, and caffeine. These ingredients combine to create the refreshing taste that many people recognize.

Advertising

One reason Coca-Cola became so successful is its creative advertising. The company has used colorful signs, television commercials, and memorable slogans for over 100 years. Coca-Cola also helped make the modern image of Santa Claus more popular through its holiday advertisements in the 1930s. Today, its red-and-white logo is recognized almost everywhere in the world.

Around the World

Coca-Cola is sold in more than 200 countries and territories. While the classic drink is the most well-known, the company also makes many other beverages, including Sprite, Fanta, Minute Maid, and Powerade. Because different countries have different tastes, some Coca-Cola products are made with slightly different ingredients depending on where they are sold.
