Cool Capybaras

Capybaras are the largest rodents on Earth. An adult capybara can grow more than four feet long and weigh over 100 pounds. That is about as heavy as a large dog!

Capybaras live in South America, especially in countries such as Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, and Argentina. They like warm places near rivers, lakes, ponds, and wetlands. Water is very important to capybaras because they are excellent swimmers. Their feet are partly webbed, which helps them paddle through the water. Their eyes, ears, and nostrils are located high on their heads, so they can keep most of their bodies underwater while still seeing and breathing.

Capybaras jump into the water when they sense danger. They can stay underwater for several minutes before coming back up for air. Water also helps them cool down during hot weather. Sometimes capybaras even sleep beside the water or rest in shallow areas.

These giant rodents are herbivores, which means they eat plants. Their favorite foods include grasses and water plants. They may also eat fruit, tree bark, and other vegetation. Like other rodents, capybaras have front teeth that continue growing throughout their lives. Chewing tough plants helps wear the teeth down so they do not become too long.

Capybaras are very social animals. Instead of living alone, they usually live in groups of about 10 to 20 animals. Some groups can become much larger when many capybaras gather around the same source of water. They communicate with one another using whistles, squeaks, barks, and purring sounds. Adult capybaras also help protect younger members of the group from danger.

One reason capybaras have become famous is their calm behavior around other animals. Birds are sometimes seen sitting on their backs, and capybaras may share their surroundings with monkeys, turtles, and other creatures. However, they still need to watch out for predators such as jaguars, caimans, and large snakes.

With their strong swimming skills, social personalities, and giant guinea-pig appearance, capybaras are truly fascinating animals. Whether they are munching on grass, relaxing beside a river, or swimming through the water, capybaras show how perfectly animals can adapt to the places they call home.
