Chicago: The Windy City

Chicago is a big city in the state of Illinois. It sits along the shore of Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes. Because of its tall buildings, busy streets, museums, sports teams, and delicious food, Chicago is one of the most famous cities in the United States. It is often called The Windy City, though the nickname comes from both its breezy weather and its history of politics.

One of the most significant things about Chicago is its skyline. A skyline is the shape a city makes when you look at its buildings from far away. Chicago has many skyscrapers, including the Willis Tower, which was once the tallest building in the world. Visitors can go to the top and stand on a glass ledge called The Ledge, where they can look straight down at the city below. Chicago is also known for its beautiful lakefront. Lake Michigan is so large that it can look like an ocean. People visit the lake to walk, bike, swim, or relax on the beaches during warm months. The city has many parks near the water, including Millennium Park. In Millennium Park, there is a shiny silver sculpture called Cloud Gate, but many people call it The Bean because of its shape. Visitors love taking pictures on its mirror-like surface.

The city has many museums to explore. The Field Museum has dinosaur fossils, ancient objects, and exhibits about nature and history. The Shedd Aquarium is home to fish, penguins, dolphins, and other sea animals. The Museum of Science and Industry has trains, airplanes, weather exhibits, and hands-on activities that make science exciting.

Chicago also has a rich history. In the 1800s, it grew quickly because of its location near railroads, rivers, and the Great Lakes. In 1871, a huge fire called the Great Chicago Fire destroyed much of the city, which resulted in a rebuilding with stronger buildings and expansion. This rebuilding helped Chicago become a center for architecture, which is the art and science of designing buildings.

Food is another important part of Chicago. The city is famous for deep-dish pizza, which has a thick crust, lots of cheese, tomato sauce, and toppings. Chicago-style hot dogs are also popular. They usually have mustard, onions, relish, tomato, pickles, peppers, and celery salt, yet they have no ketchup.
