Delightful Deer

Delightful Deer

Written by: Natalie Yao

Deer are animals that live in forests, grasslands, mountains, and even areas near towns and farms. They can be found in many parts of the world, including North America, Europe, Asia, and South America. Deer are easy to recognize because of their long legs, large ears, short tails, and gentle-looking faces. Many male deer also grow antlers on their heads.

There are many different species of deer. Some of the best-known are white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, moose, and reindeer. Deer can be very different in size. A small deer may weigh less than 30 pounds, while a large moose can weigh more than 1,000 pounds! Even though they look different, all deer belong to the same animal family. Baby deer are called fawns. Many fawns are born with white spots on their fur. These spots help them blend into sunlight and shadows on the forest floor, making them harder for predators to see. As the fawn grows older, the spots usually disappear.

One of the most interesting things about deer is their antlers. In most deer species, only males grow antlers. Antlers are made of bone and can grow surprisingly fast. Male deer usually grow a new set every year. The antlers eventually fall off, and new ones begin growing again. While they are growing, antlers are covered in a soft layer of skin called velvet, which supplies them with blood and nutrients. Deer also have good senses that help protect them from danger. Their large ears can turn toward sounds, helping them notice approaching predators. They also have a strong sense of smell. Their eyes are located on the sides of their heads, giving them a wide view of their surroundings. When frightened, deer can run quickly and leap over bushes, fences, and other obstacles.

Deer are herbivores, which means they eat plants. Their diet includes grass, leaves, twigs, flowers, fruits, nuts, and tree bark, but their food changes with the seasons. During spring and summer, deer can find plenty of fresh green plants. In winter, when food is harder to find, they eat more twigs, bark, and dried plants.

Deer are important parts of their ecosystems. They provide food for predators such as wolves and mountain lions, and their eating habits can affect which plants grow in an area. Although deer may seem quiet and shy, they are strong and alert animals.
