Geography and Nature

Germany is a country located in Europe, with a total land area of about 135 thousand square miles, making it one of the largest countries on the continent. The country’s location at the center of Europe causes it to have many neighbors, nine specifically. These bordering countries are Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. In fact, Germany has the most neighbors out of any country in Europe! Germany is also known for its vast forests and hills in its central region. However, its largest forest region is near the southwest border, named the Black Forest, with many mountains. In addition, the Black Forest is where the Danube River begins, one of the most important rivers in Europe. In contrast to the central and southern region, Germany’s northern region is a large plain. Some other major rivers that flow through Germany, besides the Danube, are the Rhine and Elbe rivers. Some major cities include its capital Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt, and Stuttgart.

The climate in Germany varies based on the time of year, warm in the summer and cold winters. Germany has many nature reserves protecting its forests that have previously been harmed by acid rain. In fact, there are 97 nature reserves in the country. Some of these trees are pine, beech, and oak trees. Animals that can be found on these reserves include mink, deer, wildcats, beavers, boars, foxes, hares, and badgers.
