They would mix snow with sweet flavors like fruit, honey, and even milk. But, because they didn’t have freezers, they had to gather snow from the mountains to make their cold treats. Imagine how cold that would be to eat!

Ice Cream Becomes Royalty’s Favorite Treat

By the 1600s, ice cream had reached Europe, and it became a favorite among kings and queens. One of the first recipes for ice cream was written down by a French royal chef named François Massialot in 1692. The recipe was very different from the creamy ice cream we know today, but it still tasted delicious!

In those days, ice cream was very expensive, and only the rich could afford to enjoy it. But things were about to change…

In 1843, a man named Nancy Johnson invented a hand-cranked ice cream maker. This made it much easier for people to make ice cream at home! No longer did you need to rely on snow from the mountains, just crank the machine, and your favorite frozen treat would be ready in no time!

By the 1900s, ice cream was being sold in ice cream parlors, and it was no longer just for royalty. The ice cream cone was invented at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, making ice cream even more fun to eat! People could now enjoy their ice cream in a cone, making it easier to walk around and eat it at the same time.

Now, ice cream is everywhere! From chocolate and vanilla to fun flavors like mint chocolate chip, cotton candy, and even pickle-flavored ice cream, there’s something for everyone.
