Happy Mother’s Day!
Why We Celebrate Mother’s Day
Every year in May, people all over the world celebrate Mother’s Day: a special time to show love and thanks to moms, grandmas, and all the mother figures in our lives. But have you ever wondered where Mother’s Day came from or why we celebrate it?
A Little History
Mother’s Day hasn’t always been about cards, flowers, and breakfast in bed. A long time ago in Ancient Greece, people held festivals to honor a mother goddess named Rhea, who was known as the mother of the gods. Later, in the 1600s, people in England began celebrating “Mothering Sunday,” a day when workers and servants were given the day off to visit their mothers and bring them small gifts.
The modern version of Mother’s Day started in the United States thanks to a woman named Anna Jarvis. After her mother died in 1905, Anna wanted to create a day where people could show appreciation for the hard work, love, and sacrifices that mothers make. She held the first official Mother’s Day in 1908. Her idea became so popular that in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a law making Mother’s Day a national holiday, celebrated on the second Sunday in May.
Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated in more than 40 countries around the world, though not always on the same day. For example, in the UK it’s celebrated in March, and in Thailand, it’s celebrated in August on the Queen’s birthday.
Mothers day significance
Moms (and mother figures) do so much. They cook, help with homework, give hugs when we’re sad, and cheer for us when we do something great. Some moms go to work every day, while others stay home to take care of the family. Some kids have two moms, a stepmom, or a grandma who takes care of them, and all of them deserve to be celebrated.
How Kids Can Celebrate
You don’t need money or a big gift to make your mom feel special, after all she is your mom!! Here are some fun and thoughtful ideas:
Make a card and write why you love her.
Draw a picture of your favorite memory together.
Help around the house without being asked!
Cook a simple breakfast (with help from an adult).
Spend time with her: read a book together or go for a walk.
The most important part of Mother’s Day is saying thank you and showing your love. One small act of kindness can mean the world.
So this Mother’s Day, think about what makes your mom special, and let her know in your own special way!
Happy Mother’s Day!!!
