Pinterest: A Creative Revolution

Through the world of scrapbooking and art, humans have been creating ways to express themselves and their thoughts for decades. Vision boards and scrapbooking alike, both show the potential that all people have whether it be aesthetically or in work. However, everything changed with the invention of Pinterest. The app and site revolved around pinning your interests, hence, Pinterest.

Pinterest was founded in 2010 by Ben Silberman, Paul Sciarra, and Evan Sharp. These revolutionaries wanted a place for people to collectively sort their ideas, goals, and aspirations. Silberman had originally planned to major in medicine, but during his junior year of college at Yale, things took a turn. Silberman wasn’t sure about the medical path, and when he graduated, he worked at Google. By working at Google, he got into technology and learned the limits of creativity. Once he got Sciarra and Sharp involved, they were able to make the iconic grids of Pinterest we see today. Pinterest has varied in a range of ways.

At first, the company wasn’t doing so well. It only had about 200 users per month, and it was mostly people like friends and family of the creators. In 2010, Silberman took a trip to Utah and pitched the premise of the company. After that, Pinterest took off and soon became the global phenomenon we know and love today. In 2012, they reached 2 billion monthly visitors. The site was quickly becoming a popular social media platform growing rapidly.

In 2014, Pinterest introduced an economic platform. The platform allowed a space for commerce and businesses to advertise their products. This allowed people to promote their pins and create new business opportunities. Soon, Pinterest was expanded to different countries and allowed for more global reach and languages. Pinterest was able to have a large influence globally, and become the icon we know today.
