Have you ever played the hit game Pokémon GO? Well, if you're familiar with Pokémon GO, you probably know that the hit game is celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2026 and hosting the exciting themed festival, Pokémon GO Fest. In this article, we'll explore Pokémon GO, along with Pokémon GO Fest's activities and latest announcements.

Firstly, for those unfamiliar with the beloved game, Pokémon GO is an augmented reality game that’s free to play on iOS and Android devices. In this game, virtual Pokémon appear on your screen so you can catch and train them as you walk around the real world. It uses your phone’s global positioning system (GPS) to show wild Pokémon on your screen, and you have the ability to throw Pokéballs at them to catch them (much like the Pokémon show)! The game has a lot of cool features like real world landmarks representing PokeStops and Gyms in the game, teaming up with players in Raid Battles to defeat and capture rare Pokémon, or even just the cool ways to train your Pokémon. The game also has a really cool Adventure Sync Feature that tracks your walking distance to hatch eggs into new Pokémon and even earn candy to evolve or power up your team.

It’s safe to say that it has been one of the most popular games available to players for free online, especially because of how it encourages players to get outside, exercise, and just socialize with other players to build community! Its popularity is shown through more than just “vibes” though, it has the numbers to prove it. The game has drawn in over 50-55 million active monthly players and generates over $500 million in annual revenue. The game literally broke records in 2016 peakinga t over 230 million monthly players, but now it has calmed down a little but stayed relevant in countries like United States, Brazil, India, the UK, and Japan. However, it is difficult to give a straightforward answer about hte amount of players in 2026 because Niantc (an American technology and spatial computing company) does not publicly disclose that information. Nevertheless many estimate around 5-6 million daily players.

Now, due to these strong numbers the game has created a strong fanbase. For that reason, Pokémon GO fest is beloved and massive. The festival is huge, hosted in major cites like Chicago, Tokyo, and Copenhagen; it features massive in person hub cities, worldwide participation, or even debuts of Pokémon. This year, the fest is signifticantly special because Pokémon GO is celebrating a decade long of gameplay and fun.

The 2026 In-Person Host Cities schedule is as follows:

  • May 19th - June 1st: Tokyo Japan

  • June 5th - June 7th: Chicago, USA

  • June 12 - June 14th: Copenhagen, Denmark

*The Global Virtual fest is being held July 11th to July 12th

During the in person festivities, attendees can explore themed habitats, trade with other players, tackle special raid battles, enjoy real-world photo installations, and participate in exclusive Special Research tasks. Going to the in-person event has quite a few benefits like reased shiny encounter rates, extra daily raid passes, reduced egg hatch distances, and encounters with rare/Mythical Pokémon before they are released globally. If you visit the Pokémon GO website (https://pokemongo.com/en/gofest), you can find more information about ticket sales and festival expectations!

During the Global Virtual Event that Niantic hosts, trainers worldwide can participate from the comfort of their own homes. Much like the in-person festival, the event provides Special Research, global challenges, and increased shiny rates, making the main event features accessible to everyone. It is especially exciting this year because the global fest is free for the first time, allowing for nine hours (10:00 AM - 7:00 PM) of unrestricted play each day!

Overall, Pokémon GO is a beloved game worldwide, from its 2016 release to 2026, with three major in-person festivals. The Pokémon community is so strong, and the Pokémon GO Fest’s successes this year and in past years reflect that really clearly. Would you ever go to an in-person Pokémon GO Fest?
