The End of An Era: Saying Goodbye to the PS4
The End of An Era: Saying Goodbye to the PS4
Written by: Sitara Nair
The beloved PlayStation 4 is gracefully stepping back as Sony prepares to wind down support, with plans to stop releasing new games and reduce developer backing by spring 2026, all while excitingly shifting their focus toward the PS5. Let’s learn about the iconic console and why Sony really wants to close this chapter.
Why do so many love the PS4?
Many kids and gaming lovers from the 2010s probably recall eagerly awaiting this exciting new console's arrival. It was the perfect Christmas gift, birthday surprise, or even just a great investment in your own entertainment, bringing so many joyful memories. Released in 2013, the 8th-generation console had 8GB of GDDR5 RAM and AMD Radeon graphics, making it so successful. Its ginormous selection of games, combined with its affordability at the time, made it beloved and highly supported. Later, the PS4 Pro would be introduced with a slimmer feel and more power, but the iconic original was still powered by an 8-core AMD "Jaguar" CPU and a 1.84 TFLOPS GPU, providing solid 1080p gaming. It had 500GB of storage (1 terabyte hard drives) and could connect via Blu-ray/DVD drive, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Bluetooth, and USB 3.0 ports. Iconic games from the console included some of today’s fan favorites (but not limited to): God of War, The Last of Us PART II, and Uncharted 4. You could stream Netflix, Youtube, and Spotify from the console, which is why it was such a dominant competitor in the gaming console industry. The iconic PS4 vs Xbox One rivalry in the 2010s had many fans taking sides, but at the end of the day the PS4 did dominate with it’s 2:1 sales ratio. The rivalry and the PS4’s success stemmed from Microsoft’s “botched” Xbox One release. Microsoft introduced the Xbox One, featuring mandatory internet check-ins, limited game sharing options, and a $499 price tag that included the bundled Kinect. In response, Sony announced the PS4 at $399, emphasizing a 'gamer-first' approach with no restrictions on used games.
Sony’s Shift Away from the PS4 Era
Despite many rumors, Sony is not just “shutting down PS4 servers” in 2026. Beginning in Spring 2026, legacy features part of the PS4, activity feeds, shared media APIs, Title User Storage (TUS), and in-game friend integrations, come to an end. The console will not just stop working all of a sudden, it’ll work just like how the PlayStation 3 works now, allowing for single player gaming and general usage, but it won’t be focused on when it comes to updates and new features. However, multiplayer servers for really popular and beloved games like Call of Duty or Fortnite will remain functional as well as the PS Store or messaging. Many might be familiar with Microsoft’s Xbox One “retirement” in 2020, where the company slowly stopped producing Xbox One consoles. The shift was made to dedicate manufacturing resources to the Xbox Series X and Series X consoles, but it still broke many fan’s hearts as this was one of the most beloved consoles where many memories were made. The “retirements” between the two consoles are similar, as the primary goal is to allocate and focus resources on the newer consoles (PS5). Just as Xbox phased out native support, the PS4 is also moving to this “legacy” status, for reasons like losing backend services.
While the PlayStation 4 era might be coming to an end, its impact on fans across the world won’t fade. Many might see its ending as irrelevant or a small deal, but for millions of players the console made so many unforgettable memories and relationships between one another. As Sony slowly turns its focus to the next generation, the PS4 will continue to be one of gaming’s most influential eras. Just as many made lifelong memories with the PS4, younger generations will be doing the same with future PlayStation Consoles.
