All About the San Francisco Bay

All About the San Francisco Bay

Written by: Anna Pafenberg

The Bay Area is home to many cultures, businesses, and families. The cities surrounding this large body of water have been extremely influential in technology and agriculture. The large mass of water known as the San Francisco Bay, is home to marine ecosystems and a plethora of unique characteristics.

The Bay is a unique body of water in the way that it is mostly landlocked save for the small channel of water known as the Golden Gate, home to the Golden Gate Bridge. The SF Bay is sixty miles long and about twelve miles across at its largest point. Many islands such as the infamous Alcatraz Island, home to the former prison. The bay also features Treasure Island, Yerba Buena Island, and Angel Island.

The most memorable and significant aspect of the San Francisco Bay is the Golden Gate Bridge. This bridge connects San Francisco County and the large metropolis to the more suburban Marin County. Without this bridge, transport between the two would be extremely difficult. When it was first built in 1937, it was the longest and tallest bridge in the entire world! The bright and recognizable red-orange color is useful for not just beauty, but also function for sailors to see from far away. The foggy expanse of the bay makes it hard to see.

The building of the bridge was not easy. San Francisco is home to earthquakes, fog, and strong tides that make it hard to build in water. In the four years of being built, a total of 11 worker deaths occurred.

The city of San Francisco is one of the most culturally influential cities in the world. The city is one of the largest technological hubs in the United States and is home to a diverse range of food, careers, and people. The bay somewhat confines the city as it lays on a peninsula, but without this large expanse of water the majority of the city would not have nautical transportation or the gorgeous view!

The San Francisco Bay is home to a variety of unique climates. In the spring, there is sunny and tolerable weather, in the summer, extremely foggy and cool, the fall offers sun and warmth, and the winter is usually rainy. The climate of the bay is very different from other places. The warmest season is in the fall, and summer is more gloomy.

Overall, the bay area and its climate are extremely unique, drawing in creative and innovative people. While the area is always changing, from bridges to prisons, it will always be home to the thousands of people who have inhabited it.
