Sarcoma Awareness Month
Sarcoma Awareness Month
Written By: Sitara Nair
Every July, we observe Sarcoma Awareness Month, a vital opportunity to educate the public about sarcoma, a rare and often overlooked type of cancer. This awareness campaign not only honors those affected by the disease but also supports advocacy efforts, encourages early detection, and promotes funding for research.
Sarcoma is a type of cancer that develops in the connective tissues of the body, including muscles, fat, blood vessels, nerves, bones, and cartilage. It is rare, as it accounts for just 1% of adult cancers and about 15% of childhood cancers. Because sarcomas can appear anywhere in the body and often go unnoticed in early stages, they are frequently diagnosed late, making awareness and education super important.
There are around 100 recognized subtypes of sarcoma, and they gets split into two categories:
Soft tissue sarcomas
Bone sarcomas (such as osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma)
Sarcoma Awareness Month aims to:
Raise public knowledge about the symptoms and risks of sarcoma
Support individuals and families battling the disease
Encourage funding for research and better treatment options
Amplify the voices of sarcoma survivors and advocates
Even though sarcoma is rare, it can be very serious. Catching it early can help people get better faster. But sometimes, doctors and people don’t know much about it, so it’s not found early.
The Symbol: Yellow and Sometimes Zebra
The yellow ribbon is used to show support for people with Sarcoma. Sometimes, especially for rare diseases, zebra stripes are used to remind us to pay attention to health problems that are less common.
How to Help During Sarcoma Awareness Month:
Share Stories: Sharing stories from survivors and their families makes the fight against sarcoma more real and helps communities come together.
Host Fundraisers: You can organize events like fun runs, bake sales, or online campaigns to raise money for sarcoma research.
Wear Yellow: Wearing yellow clothes or a yellow ribbon can start conversations and spread awareness.
Use Social Media: Post using hashtags like #SarcomaAwareness and #SarcomaStrong to join others in talking about the cause.
Donate: Give money to groups that help people with sarcoma, like the Sarcoma Foundation of America or the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative.
Hope Through Research:
Although sarcoma is challenging to treat, researchers are making progress. They are trying new medicines and working together to find better ways to help patients. Groups that advocate for patients are also asking for more support. Every person who talks about sarcoma during this month helps bring hope and more help for those affected.
