Social Media's Influence

Social Media's Influence

Written by: Sitara Nair

Social media is a big part of many kids’ daily lives. Apps like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat are used for entertainment, chatting with friends, and sharing videos or photos. While these platforms can be fun and helpful, experts say they can also affect how young people feel, think, and spend their time.

The Benefits of Social Media
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, social media can support learning, creativity, and communication when used the right way. Kids might learn a new skill, stay in touch with family, or find others who share similar interests. For example, some kids follow accounts about sports, animals, science, or art. Others use platforms to share things they create, like comics, songs, or dance routines.

In some cases, social media even helps kids learn about important topics such as mental health, climate change, or kindness.

The Risks to Watch Out For
At the same time, there are challenges. According to Common Sense Media, social media can cause some kids to compare themselves to others. When people post only happy, filtered, or exciting moments, it may seem like their lives are perfect. This can make others feel left out or not good enough, even when the pictures are not realistic.

Another problem is screen time. Social media apps are designed to keep users scrolling and watching. Spending too much time online can lead to tired eyes, less exercise, and difficulty sleeping. It might also take away time from schoolwork, hobbies, or real-life friendships.

Staying Safe and Healthy Online
Online safety is very important. Some people pretend to be someone they are not, and not all information online is true. It is best not to share personal information like your address, phone number, school name, or location. If something online feels uncomfortable or upsetting, kids should talk to a trusted adult right away.

Helpful Tips for Smart Use

  • Take regular breaks from screens

  • Follow people who make you feel positive and supported

  • Keep your posts kind and respectful

  • Ask an adult before joining a new app

  • Remember that not everything you see is real or healthy

In conclusion, social media can be a useful tool if used with care. The most important thing is to make good choices, protect your privacy, and stay balanced.
