Stray Kids-Inspired Bug Found in Amber
Stray Kids-Inspired Bug Found in Amber

Imagine walking through a forest 100 million years ago during the time of the dinosaurs. Tiny insects buzz through the air, strange creatures crawl near muddy shores, and sticky tree resin drips down trunks. One unlucky bug gets trapped in the goo, which later hardens into amber. Millions of years later, scientists discover it and realize they have found something amazing: a bug with claw-like arms that look like they belong on a crab.
Researchers recently uncovered this unusual insect in amber from the Kachin region of Myanmar. The fossil is around 100 million years old and comes from the Cretaceous Period, when dinosaurs still roamed Earth. Scientists named the new species Carcinonepa libererrantes.
What made this insect so special were the giant claws, called chelae, attached to its front legs. Chelae are pincer-like structures that work like forceps or crab claws. They are very rare in insects. Before this discovery, scientists had only seen similar claws evolve in three other groups of insects.
“Previously, such chelae were known from only three insect groups,” zoologist Carolin Haug explained. “This fossil therefore represents the fourth known case of these structures evolving independently in insects.”
To study the fossil, researchers used a specialized scan called micro-computed tomography, or micro-CT. This technology works a little like a medical CT scan, but it is designed for tiny objects. It allowed scientists to create detailed 3D images of the insect without damaging the amber.
The scans revealed that the claws were unlike anything scientists had seen before in either living or extinct insects. The shape of the chelae actually looked more similar to the claws of crabs, lobsters, and shrimp than to other bugs.
Scientists think the claws may have helped the insect catch prey, such as tiny insects living near the forest floor. The bug’s body also resembled modern insects called toad bugs, which are predators that live near muddy or sandy areas close to water.
Researchers believe C. libererrantes probably lived in a coastal forest environment during the age of dinosaurs. It may have spent its time hunting small creatures near streams or shorelines.
The insect’s name is also getting attention for another reason: it was inspired by K-pop. The species name “libererrantes” is a Latin version of the popular K-pop group Stray Kids. According to the researchers, the fossil’s claws reminded them of one of the band’s famous poses. One of the scientists on the research team is also a fan of the group.
The amber itself held more than just the strange bug. Scientists also found mites, beetles, and other tiny creatures trapped alongside it, giving researchers a better look at what life was like in ancient forests.
Amber fossils are incredibly valuable because they preserve delicate details that regular fossils often lose. Bones and shells usually fossilize best, but amber can trap soft-bodied creatures and even tiny hairs, wings, and eyes. Some amber fossils are so well preserved that scientists can study insects as if they were alive yesterday rather than millions of years ago.
Discoveries like this help scientists understand how animals evolved. Even though this insect lived long before humans existed, its unusual claws show that nature has experimented with many different body designs throughout history.
This tiny fossil may look strange, but it gives scientists an important clue about the incredible diversity of ancient life on Earth. It also proves that even the smallest creatures can make huge discoveries possible.
