The 2026 Super Bowl LX

Written by: Sitara Nair

The 60th annual Super Bowl took place this past Sunday, the 8th, with the Seattle Seahawks facing the New England Patriots in a classic game of American football. Let’s learn about the teams, the game, and why the Super Bowl is so important for not just Americans, but people across the globe!

For context, the Super Bowl began in 1967 and is not held in a single stadium; it rotates among venues in cities across the country. Americans take the Super Bowl very seriously, making it one of the biggest unofficial holidays celebrated with parties and gatherings. As the Super Bowl is the NFL’s annual league championship game, it is one of the top ten most-watched sporting events worldwide and often attracts the largest audience of any American broadcast each year. The trophy awarded to winners is known as the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named after Vince Lombardi, who coached the team to win the first two Super Bowls.

Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks are based in Seattle, Washington, and are part of the NFC West Division. They were established as a team in 1976 and currently play in the Lumen Field in Seattle's SoDo neighborhood since 2002. This team won Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014, absolutely crushing the Denver Broncos 43-8. As of this year, John Schneider is the general manager, Mike Macdonald is the head coach, and the whole team is owned by the Paul Allen Estate. The Seahawks are also known for their strong defensive history, especially during the “Legion of Boom” era, which featured star players like Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor. Their incredible defensive skills were definitely on display on the field this Sunday. Additionally, one of the key factors that make the Seahawks is their dedicated fanbase, known as the 12th Man, or 12s.

New England Patriots

The New England Patriots are a professional NFL team based on the East Coast, competing in the AFC East division. Unlike the Seattle Seahawks, who are based in Seattle, the New England Patriots (nicknamed The Pats) are based in Foxborough, Massachusetts, about 25 miles from Boston. They were originally known as the Boston Patriots, but they relocated to MA in 1971 and adopted the name New England, which encompasses the states of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. As of 2026, they are led by head coach Mike Vrabel and are owned by the Kraft Group/Robert Kraft. As of this year, the roster features quarterback Drake Maye, running back Rhamondre Stevenson, and wide receiver Demario Douglas. They are known for their record-setting dynasty from 2001 to 2019, during which they won championships under owner Robert Kraft, former coach Bill Belichick, and quarterback Tom Brady. The Pats are a beloved and strong football team, having won six Super Bowls: XXXVI (2002), XXXVIII (2004), XXXIX (2005), XLIX (2015), LI (2017), and LIII (2019).

Quick Recap Of What Happened This Year

This year, the Seahawks had an incredible season, finishing the regular season with a 14-3 record and securing first place in the NFC West and the overall NFC. They had a dominant run, finishing the postseason on a 10-game winning streak. In the playoffs, they continued to dominate, defeating teams across the nation and finally beating the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX 29-13, and the game was broadcast on NBC! This was their second Super Bowl title in franchise history, thanks to their incredible defense with Walker III and their hardworking quarterback, Sam Darnold. Additionally, aside from the football, the halftime show featured Bad Bunny, who performed a set of his hit songs, including a feature from Lady Gaga singing her hit “Die with A Smile” and Ricky Martin singing "LO QUE LE PASÓ A HAWAii".
